Masaccio: the Cappella Brancacci
Tommaso di Ser Giovanni di Mone Cassai (Castel San Giovanni in Altura, December 21, 1401 - Rome, summer 1428), better known as Masaccio, was one of the initiators of the Renaissance in Florence.
He renewed painting according to a new strict vision, rejecting the decorative excesses and artificiality of the international Gothic style, dominant at the time.
Starting from the volumetric synthesis of Giotto, Brunelleschi's perspective, the plastic strength of Donatello's statues, Masaccio inserted his figures in credible architecture and landscapes, modelled through the use of chiaroscuro.
Bernard Berenson said of him, «Giotto born again, resuming work where death stopped him».
